“There’s no place like home!” One of the most memorable lines in film history from The Wizard of Oz, 1939 which had its world premiere at Oconomowoc’s Strand Theater on August 12, 1939, three days before the Hollywood premiere.
The Athens Area Historical Society in the coming months (weather and time permitting) would like to take photos and gather information about historical houses in the Athens area.
We believe that interviewing the people of the Athens area about a historic house can provide invaluable insights into the architectural, cultural, and social history of the period in which the house was built. We are putting together a list of houses that we are interested in, but we also want the community to think about the house they live in and if they would want to be part of this. Here are some questions that we would like to ask individuals in the community about their houses.
Interview Questions:
Can you provide us with a brief history of the house and its original owners?
When was the house built, and who was the architect?
What is the architectural style of the house and are there any unique features?
How has the house been preserved or restored over the years?
Who were some of the most notable residents of the house, and what were their contributions to the local community or history?
Can you share any interesting anecdotes or personal stories about the families who lived here?
How did the lives of the residents reflect the social and economic conditions of their time?
Were there any significant events or milestones in the lives of the house’s residents that are worth noting?
How did the house’s ownership and occupancy change over the years?
We strongly believe that if people in the community see these questions ahead of time they will be better prepared if we come to their property to take pictures and then set up interviews as well. We truly believe that we have an amazing community with a variety of houses that “speak” to the history of our community and we want to not only gather photographic evidence for our society but the history of the house to be preserved as well as other ideas we have as a society for houses.
The Athens Area Historical Society encourages community involvement in preserving our local heritage. If you are interested in contributing by providing photographs of your home and responding to a brief set of historical questions, please contact us via email at athenswihistory@gmail.com. We are also available at this address to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you so much for any and all help with this!
